Sparkling holiday lights shined over the Millennium Conference offering a definitive professional experience to start the new century right! Ideas were buzzing, collegial exchanges were warm and the latest information was circulating among midwives, childbirth educators, nurses, doctors, psychologists, scientists, and philosophers!
Pre-Congress Workshop Opportunities. The Congress opened with an all-star line-up of distinguished teachers. Thursday and Friday (December 2 and 3) Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks facilitated a two day workshop on Healing Relationships: Essential Pre- and Perinatal Dynamics. One Day workshops included Judyth Weaver and Sally Clark presenting a new, interactive approach using Sandplay, Movement and Sensory Awareness. Terry Levy facilitated a training day in Treating Attachment Disorders. Bob Mandel's workshop focused on Rebirthing: Return to Primal Pleasure and Aletha Solter worked with parents and professionals in Helping Babies Heal. Vision Groups Daily at 4 PM. A special opportunity to meet in small interest groups enabled cross-pollinate ideas, created personal visions, and allowed participants to leave the Congress with an on-going group of supportive colleagues.
Formal Opening. The formal opening of the Congress on Friday evening included the Presidential Address by Barbara Findeisen and the Thomas R. Verny Award for Outstanding Contributions to Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health which was presented to David Chamberlain, Ph.D., president of APPPAH for the last eight years and author of over forty publications in this field.
Plenary Forums. Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 4 and 5) included informative and challenging plenary forums addressing Psychology and Birth, Attachment and Bonding, and Science and Birth. The Sunday afternoon forum, hosted by Michael Toms of New Dimensions Radio, focused on Visions of Birth.
Saturday Night Groups. Saturday evening (Dec. 4) was packed with exciting concurrent Interest Groups on Prenatal Communication, New Birthing Options, Ending Circumcision, Healing Perinatal Relationships, Healing Our Children - Healing Ourselves, Birth and the Expressive Arts, and Videos that Inform and Inspire.
Dramatic Presentation. Sunday evening (Dec. 5), a highly acclaimed, thought provoking and transformational drama, "Singing the Bones" was presented by Caitlan Hicks. A social hour followed the performance.
Monday Morning. On the last morning (Dec. 6), there was a brief breakfast and the Annual Membership Meeting of APPPAH. At 9 AM, Lewis Mehl-Madrona, M.D., Ph.D. presented the David Cheek Memorial Lecture on Psychosomatic Obstetrics. At 10 AM Marti Glenn, Congress Chairperson, led a group experience called "The Millennium Quilt and Visions." After closing ceremonies the Congress concluded at 12:30 PM.
Post Congress Workshops. On Monday afternoon and evening (Dec. 6) following the close of congress, Norma Wilcox and Tim Hammond presented a workshop "Healing Circumcision Shock and Trauma." Jeannine Parvati Baker presented "Psyche's Midwife: The Soul in Birth Y2K." On Tuesday, (Dec. 7) the two final workshops included a morning and afternoon training with Ray Castellino, "Tools for Healing Prenatal and Birth Trauma", and Jon Turner's celebrated experiential workshop, "Gentle Recovery of Prebirth and Birth Memories."
